Hi, I'm DAT
I'm a boy, 16 years old and live in Vietnam.
Dat's parents divorced when he was only one year old. After that, he lived with his mother for a short time in another province before moving to live with his grandmother. Dat's father has remarried. His family is poor, so he can't provide any support to raise Dat. Dat's grandmother is 79 years old and earns a living by selling lottery tickets around the village. She is old and can't go far, so she only sells about 60 tickets a day and earns about 2.5 USD. On sick days, she cannot go to work, so she usually borrows money from neighbors to buy food for her grandchild, Dat, and her. The two are living in a charity house built on the land of a local Protestant church and their family is one of the poor households in their commune. With a precarious low income, the grandmother could not afford Dat's daily living and tuition fees. The boy could be at risk of dropping out of school, so the local authorities referred the case to Holt for assistance.
