Children in Holt’s child sponsorship program love to thank their sponsors in the U.S. with letters and drawings! Here’s a drawing that one little boy from Cambodia sent to his sponsors.
Piseth is a 5-year-old boy who lives with his parents and younger sister in Cambodia. The family lives in a small house with a plot of land to grow rice. Piseth’s father is the family breadwinner and works as a cement truck driver, earning the equivalent of $10 to $25 a day. But his income is not always stable.
When Piseth turned 4, his parents wanted him to attend preschool, hoping he could get a good head start on his education before beginning first grade. But they needed some help paying for Piseth’s uniform and school supplies. Fortunately, Piseth lives near a Holt-supported community preschool in rural Cambodia, and thanks to his sponsors, he now attends preschool every day!
At school, Piseth learns about shapes, numbers, colors and letters — and he can identify certain vegetables, such as wax gourd, potato, cabbage and cucumber. In addition, Piseth has learned two children’s songs, “Frog Wears a Hat” and “Good Habits.” Piseth also gets a nourishing breakfast at school each day, and every six months, he goes to a Holt-partnered health center for a general health and dental checkup, thanks to his sponsors.
Outside of school, Piseth enjoys playing with his cousins and friends, and helps his mother collect rice from their land. He also likes to participate in wedding celebrations and festivals in his village with his family.
Piseth is grateful to his sponsors for allowing him the opportunity to go to preschool, and he recently sent this drawing as a gesture of thanks.
