Meet Miremba, a bright-eyed 6-year-old girl from a village in Uganda. With a wide smile, she’s the first to volunteer in her class. She knows the whole alphabet and says she wants to be a teacher when she grows up.

But not long ago, Miremba looked like a different girl entirely. She was thin, frail and withdrawn. Some days, there was no food at home — only water before her long walk to school. While other children played and sang, Miremba would curl up on a mat and fall asleep by mid-morning…

Hunger was stealing her childhood. That is, until you helped Miremba attend a Holt-supported preschool where she receives a hot, nutritious meal each day!

On her first day, Miremba held her cup of porridge with both hands — like it was something precious. Now, one year later, Miremba is full of energy, leading her class in song and running happily to school each day.

“These meals saved my child’s life,” Miremba’s mother says. “Because of this food, Miremba can focus on her lessons. I do not worry anymore because I know she is safe and well-fed at school.”
