Dai Lu had the odds stacked against her. But with hard work, perseverance and help from Holt donors, she achieved what once seemed impossible.
Dai Lu was born into poverty in rural China and had a small chance of ever completing her education — not to mention escaping poverty someday.
Her mom and dad were farmers and had never gone to school. One day, her father fell out of a tree when he was picking fruit and was injured so badly that he could no longer work. They fell even deeper into poverty. Her parents struggled to afford school for Dai Lu.
Then, just a few years ago, her parents got very sick. They both passed away. Suddenly, Dai Lu was an orphan. She could have completely given up. But she didn’t.
“I knew education was the best way to change my fate,” she said. “And with the help of relatives and Holt, I could move on with my education.”
Holt donors helped cover her school fees, and she became an extraordinary student — always getting good grades. This spring, Dai Lu achieved what once seemed impossible: She finished high school!
“I knew education was the best way to change my fate. And with the help of relatives and Holt, I could move on with my education.”
With lots of hard work, dedication, the support of her family and compassionate Holt donors, she has big dreams for the future. She’s about to take her college entrance exam, and then hopes to become a doctor. She dreams of helping others like herself.
“They are my inspiration to study hard and help others who are in trouble,” Dai Lu says about Holt donors. “I want to pass on this love.”
