See what school lunch looks like at a preschool in rural Uganda, why these daily meals are so important for growing children and how you can help keep children fed all summer long.
Children who attend school in rural Uganda often arrive with empty tummies. After a long walk to school, children sit down in the classroom with little energy to learn.
But thanks to kind Holt donors, children attending Holt-supported preschools in Uganda can look forward to a warm meal at school every single day. Children receive nutritious meals like porridge, a hard-boiled egg and a banana. These foods provide nutrients like protein, fat, carbohydrates and potassium so children can focus in class, and grow healthy and strong.
For some children, the meal they receive at school is the only full meal they will eat all day. In their case, school lunch can be lifesaving.“These meals saved my child’s life,” one mother says. “I do not worry anymore because I know she is safe and well fed at school.”

Generous Holt donors help ensure children receive the nutritious meals they need throughout the school year.
But during summer break, many children lose access to the meals they depend on and face uncertainty about where their next meal will come from.
