Makara always wished for a brighter future for her children in Cambodia. But living in poverty, she didn’t know if there was a different path. With her large family of nine — her husband, elderly mother and six children — Makara lay in bed at night worrying about how they would survive.
While she cared for her elderly mother and youngest children at home, her husband worked as a handicraft worker, often in another province, sending money back when he could. But one income wasn’t enough to keep her children in school or keep enough food on the table…

Right away, Makara received a flock of chickens and farm supplies like feed and equipment. To help her get started, she also received training on how to raise chickens.
“I have wanted to raise chickens for a long time. Now my wish has come true,” Makara shares.
It started with a small flock. But over the past year, Makara has raised more than 200 chickens! Your gift empowered her to earn income for her family while staying home to care for them. Her children go to school with full bellies, ready to learn and play.
And with income from her chickens, along with her husband’s earnings, Makara was able to start a garden and even buy a cow, helping her family become more self‑reliant!
