Children in Holt’s child sponsorship program love to thank their sponsors in the U.S. with letters and drawings. Here’s a heartfelt note and drawing from 8-year-old Joan in Uganda.

Joan lives in Uganda with her mother, grandfather and two siblings. When Joan was a few years old, her father left the family, making her mother the sole provider. Her mother works at a primary school but has been unable to save enough to send Joan and her siblings to school.
That’s when everything changed. A sponsor signed up to support Joan, ensuring she could attend school and learn!
Joan loves school. Her favorite subjects are reading, mathematics and Luganda language. She’s thriving academically — in fact, she was at the top of her class last year! She can recite poems from memory, and her writing skills have greatly improved. Joan enjoys playing with her friends at school, especially when they play jump rope. And thanks to nutritious school lunches, Joan has grown a lot recently. She’s healthy and thriving — all thanks to her sponsors!
At home, Joan loves helping out around the house. She often fetches water and washes dishes for the family. Bright and imaginative, Joan spends her free time playing with her dolls and pretending to be a chef. And almost every day, you’ll find her singing and dancing through the house!
Joan’s teacher helped her write this special letter to her sponsors. At the bottom, Joan drew a picture of her doll.

Joan greets you in the name of the Almighty God. She says, how are you that side? For her, she is fine. She says that she feels happy to write to you again. How is the weather now? For us, we are in a rainy season. Her mother, brothers and sisters are busy planting crops like beans, maize, cassava and sweet potatoes.
Joan lives with her mother and sisters. She graduated last year in top class and now she is in primary one at primary school. She says that in primary one, they learn subjects that are English, Mathematics, Literacy II, Writing and Physical Education.
She has new friends [with] whom they used to come together at school and play during breakfast time. She likes reading, mathematics and Luganda subjects. She likes singing and dancing and skipping the ropes. She can make dolls and ropes from banana fibers. She is able to draw good pictures in Literacy I subject. She wishes you a good holiday.
May the Almighty God bless you and keep you with your family.
