Holt photographer Aanya Bricker shares photos — and a video — taken during a recent trip to visit sponsored children and their families in Cambodia.
In Cambodia, Holt has education programs in four provinces — serving some of the country’s most vulnerable communities. Through increased access to education and more stable enrollment in school, more children will have the chance to grow financially stable as adults. Holt child sponsors and donors cover supplemental school fees and other material costs — like books and uniforms — for the children in the program. Local, on-the-ground staff visit regularly with school-aged children to teach them leadership skills and raise their awareness about child traffickers and how to identify and avoid them. Local advocates also provide tutoring and meet with parents and teachers about children’s performance in school.
While traveling in Cambodia recently for Holt, I had the opportunity to meet two girls in Holt’s educational sponsorship program. These two little girls look identical and I thought they were twins. But they are actually 8 and 10. We got invited to go up in their house. The front sitting area was probably 8×10 ft and barely fit five of us. The girls’ grandmother has been caring for them basically since they were born. She leaves at 4 a.m. each morning to work cleaning fish and earns very little money. A couple of years ago, Holt’s Cambodia team learned about the girls and enrolled them in sponsorship. With the support of their sponsors, both girls started attending school! They are now in the first grade.
