Services in Vietnam

Holt Vietnam currently operates a comprehensive child welfare program that provides permanency planning services to homeless children and at-risk families.  Model programs developed initially with U.S. Agency for International Development funding, include care for children in child welfare centers, foster care, single mother’s programs and family preservation programs.  Over the past five years, Holt has trained hundreds of Vietnamese in alternative child welfare practices and programs. As a result, pilot projects in foster care, single mothers' programming and family strengthening/preservation are assisting a significant number of children.  Holt Vietnam has developed a strong reputation within the child welfare community in Vietnam

Family Preservation Preservation of birth families is Holt-Vietnam’s first priority. Holt-Vietnam provides counseling, training, educational support and/or small economic grants to assist families who have requested placement of their child in an institution, or to families whose children are already institutionalized, in order to aid in their reunification. Approximately 150 families per year receive services.

Single Mothers Services Holt-Vietnam provides counseling, shelter, pre- and post-natal care and education in childcare, health and nutrition to single pregnant women. Vocational training and short-term assistance are available to help mothers become economically self-sufficient. About 50 single parents receive services annually.

Child Care Support is provided to child-caring institutions through a cooperative agreement with the government of Vietnam. Social workers find permanent homes for children in care through Holt-Vietnam’s family preservation and adoption programs. Each year an estimated 200 children are provided care.

Foster Care Holt-Vietnam pioneered temporary foster care services to homeless children in Vietnam. Approximately 50 children are served each year. Recognizing the positive benefits of family-based care for children separated from their birth families, Holt-Vietnam is working to increase foster care services to homeless children.

Domestic Adoption Holt-Vietnam works with local government agencies to place children with Vietnamese adoptive families. Each year about 20 children are placed in permanent adoptive families in Vietnam.

Intercountry Adoption Holt-Vietnam works with Holt International to give relinquished or abandoned children, unable to be reunited with birth families or adopted locally, a permanent family in the United States. Holt's Vietnam program is currently closed to new applications. There are no adoption applications being processed by Vietnam to the U.S at this time. The Vietnamese government is in the process of drafting a new adoption law. We will update our website as soon as information is available regarding adoptions reopening to the U.S.
