She lives with both parents, 4 brothers and 3 sisters. She is the youngest and only deaf child in the family. When she was 1 year old, she was shocked by the sound of falling wood and after that she started to lose her hearing ability. Even though she went to the health center, she could not be cured. The family dwells on subsistence farming and continue to struggle. They strongly believe that education creates opportunity for a better future.
Birtukan can only hear when someone speaks loudly.
Birtukan is a partially deaf child. There is no access to special needs education where the child is from and there is limited awareness about deafness. Her family is in a difficult position to address her basic and educational needs.
