Meet Maurice! He’s a 12-year-old extroverted boy who loves to do anything involving art, dance and science. Even though he enjoys running and jumping around, he’s described as gentle, calm and affectionate. Maurice needs a permanent family who will give him the love and support he needs to thrive.
When he was just two months old, Maurice came into care and was diagnosed with Down syndrome. His gross motor skills are excellent, while his fine motor skills are limited. When he can, he likes to practice certain skills, such as using scissors for art and crafts.
He loves to communicate, but his pronunciation isn’t always clear. Instead of verbally communicating, Maurice enjoys communicating through sign language. He learned some sign language from volunteers at his care center — remembering the gestures and using them daily.
In a new environment, Maurice often becomes nervous and quiet. It takes time for him to be comfortable with his surroundings. But when he knows the area, he loves to play!
The best fit for Maurice is a permanent, loving family with an understanding about older child adoption, as well as knowledge about Down syndrome. They should also have access to therapeutic resources and special education that Maurice can benefit from when he comes home.
