A pediatrician who cares for children at a Holt partner agency in India receives a doctor of the year award.
Last month, at an award ceremony in Dehli, India, Dr. Jayant Navarange, a highly regarded pediatrician, was honored as “Doctor of the Year” by the Indian Medical Association for his medical expertise and distinguished service to children. Since 1980, Dr. Navarange has served as an honorary pediatrician at Bharatiya Semaj Seva Kendra (BSSK), Holt’s legacy partner in Pune, where his work is very admired. “Dr. Navarange is extremely deserving of this award,” Dean Hale, Holt’s director of adoption services for India and the Philippines, says. “He is a very caring, very learned and very accomplished person.”
Dean says that it’s Dr. Navarange’s calming bedside manner and willingness to go above and beyond for children that sets him apart. “He never just accepts a diagnosis,” Dean says. “He always digs deeper.” Dean, who has worked with Holt’s India program for over three decades, recalls a time when Dr. Navarange examined a boy who had been diagnosed with severe seizures. After careful investigation, Dr. Navarange concluded that the child actually suffered from a condition that mimics seizures. The doctor took the child off of his medication immediately and placed him on a more appropriate medical track. “Dr. Navarange is extremely thorough,” Dean says. “ He has great clinical skills, good common sense and he really cares.”
Dr. Navarange graduated from B.J. Medical College in Pune, India in 1975. As a post-graduate, he began providing medical care for children at Shreevatsa, a child care center run by Holt’s former partner Society of Friends of the Sassoon Hospitals (SOFOSH), also in Pune. Five years later, Dr. Navarange began a relationship with BSSK. “His selfless devotion and expertise has been and continues to be a blessing for BSSK,” Roxana Kalyanvala, executive director of BSSK, says. “Over five thousand children have been cared for by BSSK and most if not all the babies and children have passed through the gentle hands of Dr. Navarange.” For his selfless work for orphaned, abandoned and vulnerable children at this care center, Holt presented Navarange with the Bertha Holt award in 2003. “Holt International holds a special place in our hearts,” says Dr. Navarange’s daughter, Mukta. “They were the first ones to recognize my father’s selfless work on a global stage.” In his over 40-year career, Dr. Navarange has also served as a visiting pediatrician at several other hospitals in the Pune area, and as president of the Indian Academy of Pediatrics from 1996 to 1997.
Recognized for accomplishments beyond the medical field, Dr. Navarange is an award-winning marathon runner, avid bicyclist and campaigner for the prevention of childhood obesity. In 1995, Dr. Navarange also received a bachelor of law degree from Rajarshi Shahu College of Law.
“All of this, and he is a very nice man,” Dean says. “I respect him greatly.”
Please join us in congratulating Dr. Jayant Navarange on this great achievement.
