Special Needs Today, the vast majority of children who need families through international adoption have some kind of special need — most of them medical or developmental needs. At the more minor end of the spectrum are certain neonatal conditions, such as low birth weight, premature birth or malnutrition. Even families adopting children with these more minor conditions will need to prepare for challenges.
