Abandonment,
Keeping Families
Together.
Around the world, thousands of children are growing up without the care and support of a family. Not because they don’t have one. And not because their families don’t love them. The reasons children are abandoned or relinquished vary from family to family and place to place. Poverty. Illness. War. Political instability. The enduring stigma of unwed motherhood. The list goes on.
But we believe that neither poverty nor illness nor stigma are just reasons for children to grow up apart from their families.
That's why our first priority is always to strengthen and preserve struggling families. Holt donors, people like you, provide the tools and resources. Families provide the drive and hard work. Together, we build a solid foundation for families to become stable and self-reliant, and for their children to grow and thrive.
Here is where Holt's family strengthening programs are happening around the world!
Depending on the needs of the child and family, Holt's programs for vulnerable children and families may include a combination of the following services, trainings and assistance. Always, our goal is to help families grow stable and self-sufficient — able to thrive on their own.
Holt is committed to serving the most vulnerable children and families in the most underserved regions of the world — places where poverty, illness, migration, crime, exploitation, underdevelopment and other factors put children at great risk of losing their families. We meet each family where they are and develop a service plan uniquely tailored to their circumstances. Ultimately, our goal is to empower families with the tools and resources they need to grow stable and self-sufficient.
Working with an advocate — a trained social worker, teacher or local government leader — each family receives one-on-one counseling to identify their skills, growth potential and areas where they need short and long-term support. Some parents need help accessing job skills training or small business loans to begin growing their incomes. Other families need help finding resources for a child with special needs, such as schools that offer special education. Some parents need help paying off predatory loans, while others need help with housing. In Holt's programs, we help families meet their immediate needs, as well as prepare for the future.
Because of the kind and compassionate support of donors, thousands of children and families received lifesaving and life-changing interventions in 2016. But there are many more children and families who need an opportunity or a helping hand to achieve their dreams.
children received medical care, lifesaving surgery, vaccines or doctor visits
children received assistance to stay in school, including school fees, supplies, uniforms and classroom support
children and families benefited from community development initiatives, like libraries, after-school programs and more
kids with special needs received medical care, education support and mobility devices
