Stories about those volunteers, friends, and staff who go to extraordinary lengths to support children in Holt's care around the world.
The Difference One Person Can Make
By Monica Wilton
At Holt we are often inspired by stories of kindness and generosity. We receive many donations that are particularly heartfelt, such as the package we received from Bremerton, Wash., in June 2003.
Enclosed were handmade greeting cards and a note that said, "My hobby is to make cards. I love doing it. I wanted half of the money I make to go to a charity, so I thought of you?I have included?twenty-five dollars. I will try to send you more money every couple of months."
This act of charity toward homeless children originated in the compassionate heart of 11-year-old Korean adoptee, Mikal Soo Pulse.
After a member of her church introduced her to card making two years ago, it was Mikal herself who came up with the idea of donating the money from her sales to Holt. So far she’s sold about 50 cards and plans to continue with her project.
Mikal’s favorite thing to do with her family is to go to church. "Our Christian faith has really made a difference in how we live our lives," Mikal’s mother, Sara, said.
This is readily apparent in the actions of this caring, young girl whose generous support has inspired us to tell her story. As Mikal has shown, even one person can make a difference.
