Haiti Program Update 01•25•2010

Holt has been blessed to learn that the children in our care centers in Haiti are safe.  We are grateful to the many families who have been praying for the children in our care, and we will continue to do our utmost to help the children and families affected by this terrible tragedy.

Because of the uncertainty of the Haitian government’s ability to function at this time, which includes processing adoptions, Holt’s Haiti program is currently closed to new adoption applications.  We will continue to assess the situation, but we anticipate that it will take months to determine whether children orphaned by the earthquake have surviving family members who may be able to care for them.

Holt has many children in our care who need loving, permanent families.  We encourage you to look into one of Holt’s other country programs, and we will be happy to answer any questions you may have.  Please contact Emily Lund or use our website for more information.

Holt’s Haiti program is currently closed to new applications, until we have a better understanding of how the earthquake has affected the Haitian government’s ability to function, including processing adoptions. It will also take time to determine whether children orphaned by the earthquake have surviving family members who may be able to care for them.

A second letter from Mike Noah, Director of Services for the Philippines and Haiti

Dear Adoptive Families,

I just wanted to provide you another quick update. I just learned from Mansour that it appears the Holt Fontana Village did not suffer structural damage. He also said their generators are working and they have food and drinking water for everyone there. For your information I have attached a copy of a press release that Holt sent out yesterday.

This is a difficult and emotional time for everyone. It has hard to fathom the amount of suffering and destruction we’ve been seeing in the news. Everyone is currently focusing on assessing and meeting the immediate needs of Holt Fontana, the children and staff there, and Fanmi Ansam (Holt’s family preservation program). No one knows yet the extent of damage to Governmental offices there and how their staff have been affected. There are many other factors that also have to be evaluated and looked into as soon as time can be found to do so by Holt and other NGOs. I know there are also many questions and concerns regarding what the future might hold not only for adoption cases currently in process, but adoptions in general. We would like to call and discuss these things in person with you next week.

In the interest of communicating with you in as timely a manner as possible, Lisa Vertulfo (my Supervisor) will be helping me out. Holt will be closed Monday in observance of the Martin Luther King holiday. Therefore, you’ll be receiving a call from either one of us sometime between Tuesday and Friday next week. I have included information recently posted on the Department of State website.

The CBS Early Show is doing a story on adoption from Haiti and it is possible a Holt family will be featured. If so, it would likely air in the next couple days.

Thanks for your continued thoughts and prayers for Holt Fontana and the people of Haiti.

A Letter from Mike Noah, Director of Services for the Philippines and Haiti

Dear Adoptive Families:

The Haiti Program is deeply saddened by the devastation the earthquake has caused for the people in Haiti.  We know that many of you have questions and concerns about the safety of the children in Holt’s care, and we want to keep you updated with information as we receive it.

Phone communication with our partners in Haiti has not yet been possible. We have, however, received a text message from Holt Fontana Children’s Village Director, Mansour Masse, and he reports that the children and care providers are safe.

We are unsure if there has been any damage to the structure itself. Holt will be posting periodic updates on our blog to keep you informed.  There is also a link for anyone who wishes to make a donation to help meet the need in Haiti.

Thank you for your thoughts and prayers,

Mike Noah, MSW
Director of Services
Philippines & Haiti Programs
