50th birthday ideas...

Postby asian~treasures » Tue Mar 31, 2009 1:53 pm

DH will be 50  this summer (I'm not anywhere near that old!! ). His birthday is July 3 & we always have a "pre-fourth" party with family/friends. SOOOO, there can't be a surprise party because we always have a party...the surprise would be NO party.

Anyway, I want to do something to make it special. Ideas, anyone??

Well, when my mom turned 50, my dad hired the local high school band to march down the street. (I don't think it was the whole band, but there were enough kids to definitely make a statement!)

When my husband turned 40, I had a small (almost surprise) gathering of our dearest friends in Portugal. My hubby has very short hair, so I had a picture of him copied many times over and pasted each heads shot on a blank journals' pages. Each friend gave Dave a new hair-do with a sharpie marker and then wrote a birthday wish or sentiment for him. He loved this silly and sweet reminder of his friends and family.

My mom turns 50 in a few weeks (now I bet ur DH will really feel old!!!!) and my brother and I made a sort of life book for her. It was kind of like a journal and we wrote down all the funny, crazy, remember-when type things. We found funny pics of her in the 80's with her crazy hair and added some baby pics of us also. I also took a pic of the family and had it made into one of those woven blankets...she will love that I am sure.

that is a challenge...

you could plan out the week after with a couple of friends/family members ....and say just dinner out with just the 2 of you..then surprise him with party..maybe at his fav resturant or can you rent a nearby place

Our community has this amenity center that we rent out.

happy planning! I am sure it will be a blast!

Can you plan a weekend away the weekend before and get someone to watch your kids? My girlfriends and I have long planned a trip to Hawaii for our 50ths. Which is not terribly far in the future.

I love the sharpie marker/photo/journal idea. :D

Kerin, the band thing is a hoot!!!

Sheri, for something nice to do, here's an idea...

My mom just turned 60 last month. We had postcards made (free at VistaPrint) that announced her birthday, etc. We sent it to all our family and friends and asked that they send her a card to wish her a happy 60th... our goal being to have at least 60 cards in her mailbox to open on her birthday.

Now maybe a man wouldn't enjoy it as much but my mom LOVED this. People sent funny cards, serious cards, sentimental cards... lots of people wrote lots of nice things, and people she hasn't seen in years, like old neighbors, etc, even sent well wishes. My mom is STILL looking at the cards almost 2 months later!

How about if everyone wears a t-shirt to the party that reads, "Life Begins at 60!"

For a friends 50th birthday, the kids made enlarged xerox copies of the birthday boy when he was in his early 20's. Then mounted the picture to a popcycle stick. When he walked in the room, everyone held up the picture to cover their faces. It looked like a room of his younger self. But it also slowly unveiled all the invitees.
