How successful are searches for Vietnamese birth parents?
Our overseas staff has found birth parents in 29% of the searches requested since 2002.
What methods do you use to search?
A Vietnamese social worker visits the last known address of the birth parent on your paperwork. If the birth parent is no longer there, she seeks information from current residents and close neighbors. She follows up by seeking information from the local authorities and longtime residents in the district where your birth family lived and by advertising twice in the local newspaper and in the newspapers in the city closest to the neighborhood where the birth parent lived.

What are some of the difficulties in searching for birth parents in Vietnam?
Some birth mothers had left unsafe rural villages and lived only briefly in the large cities where they relinquished a child. After the war, these birth mothers returned to their rural villages. As a result, they were not well known at the address they gave at the time of relinquishment. Other birth mothers, of course, remained in the large cities. They, however, are usually not at their last known addresses and the people who live in the neighborhood now may not have known them, as the cities have changed a great deal during the last thirty years.
